As part of linking literacy with elementary education, a Joy of Learning Campaign was conducted by the BGVS in association with the AIPSN to rebuild the interest of children in schools and to demonstrate, particularly to teachers and parents, that the teaching and learning processes can be made interesting, relevant and joyful.
The programme, consisting of a series of Bal Melas / Children’s Science Festivals (C.S.Fs) at village, block and district levels, was highlighted by a seven-day National Joy of Learning Festival (NJOLF), organised in New Delhi in November, 1994.
Around 10-15 lakhs children and 35,000 teachers were exposed to the JOL campaigns through more than 250 district level, and a large number of block and village level, JOL festivals. The NJOLF was attended by about 1,000 children (500 host children from Delhi and 500 guest children from all over India), 200 teachers, representatives of teachers’ organisations, creative persons and educational activists from all over the country.
Today, many schools and teachers are trying to incorporate a sense of fun and enjoyment in the education, with an attempt to take out the dullness and drudgery.
